How To Maintain Good Oral Care While Pregnant

After you get the happy news that you are pregnant, you have a laundry list of things to do. However, one aspect of daily life that you can forget about is your oral care. Even though most dental procedures are not an option while you are pregnant, you do have a few ways to maintain your teeth and gums during this time.

Get Routine Examinations

During your pregnancy, the dentist cannot do certain procedures such as deep cleanings or extractions. Even x-rays are unwise while you are pregnant. However, this does not mean that you stop visiting your dentist on a routine basis.

One service that is highly valuable to you is a basic examination of your teeth and gums. Your gums are especially susceptible to periodontal disease such as pregnancy gingivitis.

This form of gingivitis is caused by the increased level of pregnancy hormones, which causes the gums to redden and bleed. Forty percent of pregnant women will develop this condition and in many cases, it will resolve itself after the baby is born.

Use Oral Care Products Daily

Unfortunately, one unpleasant aspect of being pregnant is morning sickness. During this time, you may vomit on a regular basis. The problem with regular vomiting is that the acid from your stomach can damage the enamel of your teeth.  

When you visit your dentist for a routine examination, you want ask their advice on which oral care products you should use. Usually, the dentist will recommend a fluoride toothpaste and mouth wash for everyday use. Additionally, your dentist may also be able to recommend brands that have a blander taste, which may help if strong smells or tastes make you nauseous.  

Maintain Nutrient Rich Diet

Maintaining a nutrient rich diet is a key element of having healthy pregnancy. You and your baby need certain minerals and vitamins to stay healthy. However, by added certain foods to your diet, you also protect your teeth and gums.

For healthy teeth and gums, you need plenty of calcium and vitamin D. This vitamin allows your body to absorb the calcium you consume. To accomplish this goal, you should increase the amount of dairy products you eat or drink. These items can be regular milk, cheese and yogurt that are fortified with calcium and vitamin D.

This type of diet will also help your baby develop strong bones and teeth, since he or she gets the added benefits from these minerals and vitamins. You should always consult your OB/GYN and your dentist before changing your diet.

Being pregnant comes with enough worries, which is why your teeth and gums should not be one of them. Luckily, you can maintain good oral care with some help and guidance from your dentist—talk to them to learn more.
